Shifting the Balance of Power

The balance of power is shifting, thanks to civil claims brought by our members. These cases are not just about individual coaches - they hold governing bodies to account for systemic failures that allowed abusive cultures to develop.

Civil Claims & Legal Redress: a Catalyst for Change in Gymnastics

The release of Athlete A on Netflix in 2020 was a watershed moment for thousands of athletes around the world - triggering the rise of Gymnasts Alliance Movement on social media. In response, in the UK, Gymnasts for Change International’s co-founder, Claire Heafford, initiated civil claims against British Gymnastics involving over 40 UK claimants. Six years on, many survivors are still waiting for redress, with 30 of these civil claims yet to be settled by British Gymnastics.

Nonetheless, our civil claims have been a real catalyst for change, with legal redress helping to drive institutional accountability and systemic reform by putting national governing body under pressure, and inspiring similar movements internationally.

In 2026, G4CI continues to receive complaints from current athletes and parents struggling to navigate the British Gymnastics complaints process. Despite British Gymnastics’ programme of reform, blowing the whistle on key clubs and coaches remains as challenging today as it was six years ago.

It’s important to see civil claims as a form of redress for those who've experienced abuse, but also to see it part of the wider context for keeping sustained pressure up on British Gymnastics to make sure that they solve these situations for the future.
